Believe in Family

President Spencer W. Kimball former president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said this, “Many of the social restraints which in the past have helped to reinforce and to shore up the family are dissolving and disappearing. The time will come when only those who believe deeply and actively in the family will be able to preserve their families in the midst of the gathering evil around us.”

He made this statement in 1980 and I believe that we are truly seeing it come to pass in our day. In today’s society marriages and families are not considered to be very important. Americans have become less likely to marry which as a result the marriage rate has declined. We have also seen a decline in the number of children couples are bringing into this world.  I think that a lot of anti-family messages attack the youth of today. I believe this is one of Satan ways to attack the family because he will never have a body or a family.

I know for some getting married and raising a family can be a very scary decision to make. Why do you think that is the case?  Maybe because they feel inadequate? I have felt inadequate a lot of different times in my life and that can be very difficult to overcome. I also know that those feelings of inadequacy have made me turn and rely more on the Lord.

For me, I always knew that I wanted to get married and have a family. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have had a lot of rewarding moments because of my decision to start a family. I love the quote from President Dallin H. Oaks that states, “A good marriage does not require a perfect man or a perfect woman. It only requires a man and a woman committed to strive together toward perfection”. I am far from perfect, but I am lucky to have a very forgiving spouse and we just try to do our best every day.

I do believe deeply and actively in the family and want to be with my family forever. I try to teach my children the importance of marriage and family. I want them to feel like I do about family and not to second guess themselves when it comes time for them to get married and start a family.
